Program Schedule

Please join us for the 2nd UF APALSA Annual Conference to be held in Gainesville, Florida.*
  • Friday, March 25th, Legal Information Center, 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm  
    • 5:30 PM - 6:00 PM: Registration, UF Law campus courtyard
    • 6: 00 PM - 6:10 PM: Welcoming Remarks
    • 6:10 PM - 7:00 PM: Keynote Speaker on Human Trafficking by Jenny Do, a renowned philanthropist, human rights activist, and attorney from California.
    • 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM: Panel and Q&A with Dr. Thang Nguyen, Professor Kenneth Nunn and Ms. Nadia Firozvi.
    • 7:30 PM: Reception and photo documentary exhibition at Legal Information Center (Law Library)
      • Wine and refreshment will be served. 

  • Saturday, March 26th, Martin H. Levin Legal Advocacy Center, 9:30 am-4:15 pm
    • Registration and Breakfast- 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m, Registration is inside the Legal Advocacy Center
    • Opening Remarks- 10:30 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
 Panel– Challenges in and out of the Courtroom –11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Learn about challenges in and out of the courtroom and how to overcome these challenges from experienced litigators and solo practitioners. This workshop will also discuss the challenges of cultural barriers and the need for cultural consciousness when working for minority clients.

Panel: Community Lawyering- 12:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m.

This workshop focuses on the role of lawyers as legal advocates in the community. It will explore the principle of lawyers empowering a community to achieve its own goals, as opposed to representing the community. This panel will explore some of examples community  based lawyering, specifically for minority clients during the Gulf Oil Spill and Hurricane Katrina.

Speaker– Doing Business in Asia: Compliance and Ethics - 2:10 pm to 3:10 pm                             
This is a broad topic which includes issues in domestic laws such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices act, Anti-discrimination laws and Corporate reporting requirements, as well their foreign counterparts and general ethics.  The presentation will cover how to best approach these requirements while conducting business in Asia, and what successful compliance programs should contain.

Panel: Career Choices in the Economic Downturn- 3:10 p.m. to 4:10 p.m.

A presentation of career choices in the  private practice, public interest, academic, and judicial fields. The panelists will introduce some of the methods that young attorneys and law students should consider in seeking employment, in addition to the value of alternative career paths.
